THE RESERVE
2019-2021 Client: Das Reservat Role: Landscape Designer (Freelance)
Project Location: Berlin, Germany
This project displays landscape architecture’s role in stewardship of the Earth and in shaping modern culture.
To landscape is to work with the planet – improving, enhancing and adorning it – with The Reserve illustrating how human processes and natural systems are linked together. As human impact on Earth has reached system-wide disruption, altering every corner of the planet, this project acknowledges the local ecosystem we care for. Urban growth must be supported at the same time as leaving the infrastructure in place to protect wildlife habitat. Serving more than aesthetic purposes, residential and commercial gardens are particularly vital for insect pollinators, as well as exposing users to natural life processes and sense of place. Not only do pollinators support biodiversity, they’re an indicator of the ecosystem’s overall health. It is the role of designers and urbanists to work with natural systems and use these processes as an instrument, setting aside space for non-human use. It is through our role as the healer that the worst might still be avoided.
