HOW DISTANCE CHANGES STARBUCKS
Starbucks is easy to dismiss in cities. From Brooklyn to Berlin, it's simply one café among many, its familiarity making it almost invisible. Independent coffee shops have long since claimed the cultural high ground, making Starbucks a choice of convenience rather than craft.
Drive far enough beyond the city, however, and the relationship reverses. Along the interstate, Starbucks no longer competes with neighborhood cafés. It competes with truck stops, gas stations, and fast-food counters. The menu hasn't changed, but the landscape has. Reliable Wi-Fi, healthier food, and a comfortable place to sit become metropolitan amenities in places where they have become increasingly scarce.
Distance transforms a ubiquitous global chain into a reliable piece of metropolitan infrastructure, carrying the routines, expectations, and cultural signals of the city deep into the American interstate landscape.
